Perhaps the most bizarre and unimaginable outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic is the requirement - tacked onto a COVID relief bill - that the US government cough up a report and come clean about UFOs.

I think it’s about time.

My guess is that it’s not really going to be exciting reading. It’s not going to discuss secret meetings between the President and Ambassador G!lax from the Galactic Federation or anything like that. Instead, it will be an admission that yes, there’s some odd stuff going on and no-one can explain it. “What’s the big deal?” you might ask. And yeah, it doesn’t seem like much. But I think it runs contrary to a very deep current of thinking by military and government entities: it’s an admission that

• we don’t know what’s going on, and
• we can’t protect the country from it.

Humans, and especially humans in the USA, like to think we’re the top of the heap. We might admit that (say) sharks are the apex predators of the ocean. But God Himself gave us humans dominion over fish and everything else. And if for some reason humans decided that all sharks need to die, then it’s Bye Bye Sharks.

Anyone who’s ever put any serious thought into the notion of extraterrestrial intelligence has almost certainly considered that aliens who have the capability to travel to Earth can almost certainly kick our ass.

But nobody in the government wants to come out and admit that, for all of the tax dollars they’ve spent on defense, there are unknown and presumably advanced things in the sky that might one day decide to kill us all, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
