True Love and The Princess Bride

I think in the shower. Today’s thinking involves The Princess Bride. Which is a great movie that has a rotten message, namely, all of the stuff about “True Love” that motivates Westley to pursue Buttercup for years and years. This is the kind of crap that makes old people like me roll our remaining eyes when we hear young couples speak sincerely about how much they love each other, and how it’s forever, yadda yadda.

The movie is about True Love. But it’s not the thing with Westley and Buttercup: it’s spelled out rather clearly, I think, that that’s a fairy tale. The real “True Love” in the story is hidden, but obvious when you think about it.

The real “True Love” is the love of the grandfather for his grandson. ”As you wish.”
