- Noise Engineering: Tonnetz Sequent

Tonnetz Sequent is a triad generator that maps gate inputs to the triadic transforms of the Eularian Tonnetz allowing one to move through triadic space with rhythm. It outputs three - 1v/8va control voltages to control the pitch of oscillators. It has three gate inputs for the standard Tonnetz transforms: Parallel, Leading, and Relative. There are also inputs to reset the triad to a reference triad, perform semitone transpose and change which triad types form the transform domain (major/minor, augmented/major, diminished/minor).

- Noise Engineering: Ataraxic Translatron (purple faceplate)

The Ataraxic Translatron is a linear feedback shift register oscilator similar to those used in the first generation of home video game consoles such as the Atari VCS as well as many other classic arcade games.

Linear feedback shift registers are an ingenious way to produce a variety of sounds with an extremely small amount of hardware. The Atari VCS used only around 35 logic gates to produce all of its sounds. The complexity of tone for relatively minimal hardware made this synthesis technique common for sound in the first generation of video games where hardware costs were the primary development constraint. As video games entered popular culture these sounds became iconic but have seldom made it out of the video game world except when sampled from the games themselves or as their own genre of music “chiptunes”. The Ataraxic Translatron gives you classic arcade sounds in Eurorack format to be used just like any other VCO.

12 patches vary from a simple square wave to white noise with your favorite Atari sounds in between. All tones are available in 6 octaves range. A standard 1 volt per octave pitch control and CV control of the current patch are squeezed into a compact 4HP. An external clock mode that allows an external clock to drive the shift register allows for additional tone generation and modulation.

x Noise Engineering: Basimilus Iteritas

The Basimiuls Iteritas is a digital drum synthesizer with its roots in the analog world. At its heart it is a simple eight oscillator additive synthesizer with adjustable waveform, harmonic spread and decay. Adjustable attack including a noise oscillator is also included. These are summed and fed into an infinifold section for more crunch and variety.

The Loquelic Iteritas is an 8hp comb oscillator producing a wide variety of woody, throaty tones as well as basic waveforms. It uses variable sample rate technology to turn digital aliasing into harmonic distortion. It also features a built in infinifold wave folder which gives another dimension of voltage controlled sound.

The Zularic Repetitor is a rhythmic gate generator based off of the rhythmic theory of African music. A core pattern forms the basis and variation is achieved by offsetting this pattern in time relative to the base.

This module contains 16 mother rhythms from African, Indian, Latin and Funk roots. Each rhythm outputs four variations of itself simultaneously while allowing the offset of each part in time by CV and Knob. It requires only a master clock to run and also allows the pattern to be reset by an external gate.

x Hackme: Vectr

Vectr is a 3D sensing gesture controller and sequencer. Vectr senses a users hand in space above it's surface. Think of moving your hand through a cube of air. Vectr senses your hand and uses its position to generate CV. It has one output for left to right, one for up and down, and one for near to far. The sensing area is about 3.5"x4"x6". Vectr has a really deep menu system, allowing for all sorts of customization and configuration. For instance, each output can be individually configured in a number of ways, such as: range, quantization, linearity and slew rate.

Vectr is also a sequencer. Sequences of hand movements can be recorded up to 50 seconds long. Sequence recording and playback behaviors are also configurable, allowing for each to to be triggered internally or externally to make synchronized loops. The sequences and settings can be saved in non-volatile memory to be recalled after power down. Vectr also has a number of fun features like overdubbing, which allows for each axis to be recorded individually like a multi-tracker. There is a sequence mode where you can quickly and easily change between up to four recorded sequences. You can also enter a mode which allows you to play a sequence like scratching a record.

Vectr has inputs and outputs for clock synchronization. So, Vectr can synchronize to another clock in the system or act as the main system clock with provisions for clocking another sequencer.

Vectr is super fun to play with and presents an entirely new way to interact with your rig.

Usage of boolean operations between trigger inputs.
Provides quantized voltages and also unquantized voltages at the same time.
Named for the French philosopher & mathematician René Descartes, it uses his Cartesian coordinate system to unlock the analog step sequencer from the shackles of linearity.

x Make Noise: Mysteron

The Mysteron is a voltage controlled Dual Digital Waveguide algorithm that is a bit of a mystery even to those of us involved in its design. Despite being completely digital, it is highly organic, displaying variation in outcome often seen only in nature. It is a formless blob of DSP that you grow, modulate and patch program into new sounds, some vaguely recognizable and others completely otherworldly. The range of sounds possible is quite large. From pianissimo to fortissimo, short percussive bursts to bowed, sustaining pitches. The two waveguides can be pitched together or independently, mutated with harmonic or inharmonic waveforms and fed back into themselves or each other.

x Make Noise: tELHARMONIC

The tELHARMONIC is a Multi-Voice, Multi-Algorithm synthesizer module named for the music hall considered by some to be the location of the first electronic music concerts. It was coded by Tom Erbe with the goal of presenting three historically important pioneering electronic tone generation techniques less often implemented within the modular synthesizer.

The tELHARMONIC's roots go back further than the advent of electronic music, as it also takes a new approach to handling music theory in the modular context. TONIC, INTERVAL, DEGREE and D-GATE, allow for patch-programming of complex chord progressions, scales, melodies and playing styles. This Voltage Controlled Music Theory guides the Algorithms in a unified way, whereas CENTROID, FLUX and H-LOCK sculpt the timbre of each Algorithm uniquely, allowing for complex sounds to be created around a unified melodic structure and pattern.

x Make Noise: Richter Wogglebug

The "WoggleBug" is a random voltage generator, originally designed by Grant Richter of Wiard Synthesizers. It is a continuation of the "smooth" and "stepped" fluctuating random voltage sources pioneered by Don Buchla within the Model 266 "Source of Uncertainty," expanding it to include the other-worldly Woggle CVs (stepped voltages with decaying sinusoids edges). The Wogglebug is a very musical random voltage generator where it is possible to synchronize all random signal to a Master Clock. Guaranteed to unleash your synthesizer's ID MONSTER!

x Monome: Teletype

Teletype is a dynamic, musical event triggering platform.

Scripts are assigned to each of the eight trigger inputs. herein you can set CV values (four outputs) and trigger gates (four outputs), with extended functionality for pattern manipulation, slews, randomness, sequences, basic arithmetic, stacks, delays, and much more. CV input and a parameter knob can be integrated into scripts, and an internal metronome makes for standalone self-running systems.

Scripts are modified with a USB keyboard which plugs into the front panel. syntax is simple and easy to learn– tutorials, video, and reference pages are available. teletype ships with numerous ready-to-run musically explorative patches. teletype runs without the keyboard attached– you might treat editing as precomposition, or leave the keyboard plugged in for live coding.

Pattern creation can happen in various ways, including a full-screen “tracker” mode which will be familiar to many.

Remote control of monome trilogy (white whale, meadowphysics, and earthsea) modules is possible through a rear ribbon cable connection– various parameters of these modules (such as playback position, sync, reset, and preset recall) can be scripted into the trigger inputs on teletype. note: free firmware update required for trilogy modules, and a pin header must be soldered on. header and cable included with teletype.

Scripts are stored in internal flash. bootup and execution is instant. this is not a computer. it’s a digital algorithmic ecosystem, thoroughly designed for the modular environment, with an 80′s terminal sensibility.

The LS1 is a capacitive technology slider that will generate CV and GATE signals along with the movement of your finger on its surface.

LIVE Mode

Each time your fingers touches the slider surface a voltage is sent out the CV jack and the relevant GATE signal is also put out. Pair this with a quantizer and, you know….. The LEDs on the side of the slider will light up as the voltage output changes.

HOLD Mode

Without having your finger on the slider, press the rec/mode capacitive buttton. The rec/mode LED will light solid. Same as above but the CV value is held when you whitdraw your finger. Instant control surface for VCFs, VCAs and any other CV controllable stuff in your modular! Tap on the rec/mode again to back up to LIVE mode! The LEDs on the side of the slider will light up as the voltage output changes.

REC Mode

When you have your finger (steady or moving)already on the slider, by pressing the rec/mode capacitive button you START recording the movements on the slider. When you stop pressing the button (or you exceeds 4 seconds) the output will start ‘playing’ in loop what you recorded. The LED on the rec/mode button will blink fast during the recording and slower during the playback phase. If you operate again on the slider the output will be overridden with you physical intervention but the ‘timing’ won’t be lost. To end the PLAY phase just tap on the rec/mode button again. The LEDs on the side of the slider will light up as the voltage output changes.

OPTIONS:

For each of those modes you can choose (via jumpers on the back) the CV range (0-5V or 0-10V), the orientation of the module (upside down anyone???? you possibly would like to choose where your jacks are!!!), the mode of RECORDING, internal or external (the GATE output in this case doubles as a REC button trigger, permitting you to ‘sync’ with some cosmic rhythm…).

There are two versions available:

  1. uZeus with flying bus boards- this version features two ribbon bus boards. the ribbon bus boards are approximately 14 inches long and each cable features 5 connectors (so 10 connectors total on a stock ?zeus). additional flying bus boards of the same spec can be purchased above (uZeus flying busboard spare cable, single cable with 5 connectors). all you have to do is plug in your modules and play.
